Crossing the Blood-Brain Barrier
Researchers have believed that if a substance could pass the blood-brain barrier, then a therapeutic solution could be devised to help neurological diseases like Parkinson's, Lou Gehrig's, Multiple Sclerosis and Alzheimer's. To pass this barrier, a molecule must be less than 500AMU (atomic mass unit) and be oil soluble. All essential oils weigh less than 500AMU, and all are oil soluble.
Essential oils high in sesquiterpenes such as Cedarwood, Patchouli, Sandalwoods, Ginger, Myrrh, Vetiver and Black Pepper have been documented to cross the blood-brain barrier. Moreover, essential oils also increase oxygen levels in the brain. According to Dr. Asawa of Japan and Dr. Richardson of England, the inhalation of unadulterated essential oils increases brain activity by increasing blood flow by 15% and oxygen by 25%. Researchers with another study at Vienna and Berlin Universities, (Nasel, 1992) found that essential oils high in sesquiterpenes can increase levels of oxygen in the brain by up to 28%.
The ability of essential oils to pass the blood-brain barrier gives them enormous therapeutic potential against neurological diseases such as mentioned above. By delivering more oxygen to the blood and cells of the body, essential oils have been proven to have dramatic effects on emotions, immune function, hormone balance, energy levels and may protect cellular DNA from damage.
A university in Japan experimented with diffusing different oils in the office. When they diffused Lemon there were 54% fewer errors, and with Lavender there were 20% fewer errors. By combining mentally stimulating oils like Lemon and Lavender with oils high in sesquiterpenes such as Sandalwoods and Cedarwood, we create a blend that will potentially improve concentration and enhance mental abilities of those who suffer from neurological diseases. Awaken and Potential are good examples.
To read more on the topic of Alzheimer's, we have some encouraging testimonials from people helping loved ones using essential oils. If you have your own testimony to share, we'd love to hear from you.
